I didn't think 2 cities 2 hours apart could be so different but here is a short list I've compiled of how San Antonio is different from Austin. I will add to it as I experience it.
1. The HEB's don't have "Parent with Child" parking.
2. The HEB doesn't have those "2 seater car shopping carts"
3. People here drive either 90mph or 20mph.
4. The people that check me out at the registers are so much more friendlier.
5. San Antonio lacks/non-existent in outdoor parks
6. People are definitely more out of shape here (reason they are ranked #4 fattest city)
7. I have met so many families with 4 or 5 kids.
8. It may be where we live, but we can't find a non-chain restaurant to eat at within 10-15 minutes.
9. Electricity is cheaper. Our electric bill for last month was only $230. And that's with the doors fully opened 2 days while we moved in, no window treatments, and temps in the high 90's. In Austin, our bill would have been $300 easily and the house was smaller.
10. Our neighborhood is about 75% military or retired military. We are surrounded by Air Force and FBI employees.
11. The amount of "tagging" or graffiti is absurd and I don't understand why punk kids do it.
12. This town runs on a much slower pace. They are in no hurry to get anywhere or do anything. The interaction between people is fine, but the wait for our food to be cooked, etc... is ridiculous. It took us an hour and a half to eat lunch one day. And with 2 kids that are tired, it's not fun and we will not apologize for everything they threw on the ground while waiting so long!
13. I am really surprised by the level of intelligence of some of my husbands co-workers I have met. Not all, but a few I'm thinking, "you report to these people?". As you all know, he did take a job with less stress, rank, and responsibility so that could be a reason. It's just a different compared to Austin which is more highly educated.
